課程概述

In this course about Eco-theatre, we will read a variety of plays that directly deal with the human impact on environmental change—including global warming, pollution, and wildlife extinction—and the roles played by individuals, classes, communities, and governments in dealing with environmental protection and destruction. We will also explore ecocriticism’s usefulness in unearthing new perspectives regarding traditional plays and dramas not directly engaged with environmental issues but that can tangentially reveal an understanding and concern about the natural environment.
The texts, however, are not all ‘gloom and doom’ and we will also consider the role of comedy in helping us to persevere and survive environmental hardship. We will also keep in mind theatre’s aesthetic responsibilities to persuade through artfulness. We will examine the various theatre forms and constructions, rhetoric and styles to address ‘hyperobjects’—crises such as global warming that are so large that individuals have a difficult time conceiving of them, let alone addressing them. We will not only investigate the approach of realistic playwrights, but also those works that conceive of theatrical worlds that are more abstract, spiritual, and magical.

課程目標
The purpose of this course is to build an ‘environmental awareness,’ a new consciousness of how modern human life negatively impacts the nonhuman world through the study of various dramas and drama ecocriticism. We will consider the following questions: Do live theatre performances contribute any unique understanding of the Anthropocene different from novels and films? Why have so few contemporary plays dealt with environmental issues, and can they be entertaining works of art, or only a means of proselytizing the audience? How is the natural environment represented in the artificial world of the theatre?
This course attempts to address the question of the theatre’s role in the Anthropocene—both in terms of content as well as forms of production. Can ‘green’ become the new norm so that everything theatre artists do is done with a consciousness of resource protection? How does modern theatre shift from being obsessed with individuals and society to include the importance of the nonhuman? Our status in the Anthropocene makes it imperative that we understand how human population increases and material aspirations are unsustainable. Therefore, the art of theatre, like all other disciplines, must contribute to a deeper understanding of our predicament and at the same time, employ artistic devices that attract and please us. That is, the course intends to examine social and political anxiety about our use of the environment as well as redirect aesthetic expectations toward our biological integration with natural ecosystems.
